On January 9th, 2013, the Center of Multidisciplinary Research in Aging and ILC-Israel held a conference in our series 'Innovations and Challenges in Geriatrics and Gerontology'.

This year’s conference was titled “Directions in Medicine in our Aging World”, and was open to professionals, students, academics, and retirees who are interested in the field of aging.

The conference was held at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva, and included two parts: an award ceremony in memory of the late Dr. Judy Bernstein, a noted and well-loved lecturer who specialized in doctor/patient communication, and a series of lectures by specialists in a variety of medical fields.

Ms. Ahinoam Gluzman, a medical student at BGU, was awarded the Judy Bernstein price for excellence in doctor/patient communication studies.

The opening lecture by Professor Gabriel Gurman was titled “The Importance of Doctor/Patient Communication in Post-Modern Medicine”.

The first conference session on the contribution of the bio-technological model to medicine included lectures by Dr. Albert Sasson , “New Trends in Orthopedic Care of the Older Patient” and by Prof. Yaakov Henkin on “Cardiology: The Therapeutic Approach to the Older Patient and Expectations for the Future”.

The second session discussed the contribution of the bio-psycho-social model to medicine, and included lectures by Dr. Tzvi Dwolatzky on “Innovations in Psychogeriatric Care and Forecast for the Future”, and by Prof. Yizhal Berner on “Geriatric Medicine – the Guardian of Clinical Medicine in the 21st Century”.

Despite a violent rainstorm that flooded our small country, causing havoc in transportation, the conference was well attended.
