International Longevity Centre (ILC) Canada/ILC Global Alliance along with Life Research Institute, the University of Ottawa co-hosted the side event titled “Live Well, Learn Well - an International, Inter-sectorial Discussion on Lifelong Learning and Income Security” on 15th April 2019.
The event took place in the United Nations headquarters in New York as a side event for the 2019 Open-ended Working Group on Aging.
The purpose of the side event was to bring together international and inter-sectoral evidence on older persons’ experience in relation to lifelong learning and income security. Margaret Gillis, President of ILC Canada, chaired the session and encouraged the audience to “consider the impact of the human rights convention on older persons, when their rights are not respected.”
The panel include distinguished international experts from North America, Europe and Africa, as shown below:

- Mr. Fabio Duran Valverde, International Labour Organization, Geneva
- Prof. Jacques Fremon, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Ottawa, Canada
The Q & A session was moderated by Dr. Julie Byles, President of ILC Australia. In her closing remark, Dr. Linda Garcia of the Life Research Institute, the University of Ottawa stressed that economic security and life-long learning are intimately tied together and that older citizens can contribute to the advancement of humanity. The side event closed with a standing ovation from the audience thanking the organizers and participants.
