Japan Observes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (Japan Jul.08)

On June 16 2008, Japan observed The 3rd Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day together with many other countries around the world. In Japan, the event focused on the review of the three-year legislation, "Law of the Prevention of the Elder Abuse”.  Participants of the event noted that while the report of abuse has become more frequent rather than remaining unreported, there is much to improve in developing systematic methods for helping victims.

On July 5, Japan Academy for the Prevention of Elderly Abuse sponsored an international conference, "Response to Elder Abuse: Prevention of Elder Abuse" in Chiba.

ILC-Japan gave a presentation at the both of the events about the current status of elderly abuse legislation in various countries reflecting the discussion at the "Human Rights in an Ageing World” conference in London, October 2007.

Elder Abuse Prevention and Caregiver Support Law was Implemented since 2006 in Japan. This Law is unique in its focus on the rights of older persons as well as their caregivers.
