Caregiving Project for Older Americans announced a new national advisory committee (USA Jul.07)

The Caregiving Project for Older Americans announced a distinguished gr oup of American leaders who have agreed to join a new national Advisory Committee including Former First Lady of the United State, Rosalynn Carter. Other members include television personalities, corporate executives and aging experts. The Caregiving Project for Older Americans, launched in 2006 by the ILC-USA and the Schmieding Center for Senior Health & Education (SCSHE), aims to bring greater awareness of the caregiving crisis, develop a national systemic approach to recruiting, training and retaining paid professional caregivers, and enhance the key role of this new generation of caregivers.

Over 150 guests gathered at the Metropolitan Club in New York City in late April to celebrate the 80th birthday of Dr. Robert N. Butler, founder, president and CEO of the International Longevity Center.

The Caregiving Project for Older Americans, with support from MetLife Foundation, invited proposals from community colleges under the Community College Caregiver Training Initiative. Over 70 community colleges submitted applications for the grant. The training programs awarded under this initiative may either be new or those that build upon existing programs. Up to twelve grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded. Final selections will be made in late June.

The ILC-USA Board of Directors welcomed three new members when they convene for the June board meeting. Karen K. C. Hsu is a civic leader in education, conservation and natural history. Joe Feczko is president for worldwide development at Pfizer. Dr. Regina S. Peruggi is the president of Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York.

In its eighth consecutive year, the ILC-USA is preparing for the 2007 Age Boom Academy. The immersion seminar for journalists has been funded by The New York Times Company Foundation since its inception. This year, Stanford University Center on Longevity also join as a sponsor. The Academy, themed "Science In Society”, will be conducted at the ILC, September 23-28.
