1 Public Relations / Education
1. Publication of “Global Information Journal on Longevity and Society”
A collection of global information about longevity society was planned and published as a quarterly journal in Japan.
We focused on a wide range of issues including “discussions on what Japanese society should be in future”.
The English edition will be also published for abroad in March 2010.
2. Compilation of a data book to introduce older people in Japan titled “A Profile of Older Japanese 2010”
We continued this year to make up an English booklet which
introduces accurately the status of older people in Japan through data and comments.
3. Completion of “Global Aging Report” (Japanese version)
The Japanese edition of “Global Aging Report” which highlights the status quo of aging societies in 10 Alliance countries is scheduled to be issued in March 2010.
2 Research Project (national subsidy project)
1. A Continued Survey on a Daily Life of Older People
This five year continued survey and research has eventually come to an end. It aims to identify diverse factors which sustain independent daily life of people aged 75 and older, as well as guidelines for independence in aging society.
Year-by-year changes of their general living condition were surveyed, including Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, mind and body conditions, families and friends, human relationship in the communities, housing conditions, health care and long-term care, etc.
We would like to introduce the research outcome to the world by the report titled “For the people aged 75 and over to continue their independent daily life”.
2. Death and dying at home
ILC-Japan started a new research project to analyze why it is getting more and more difficult to die at home in Japan. And this project is an international comparative survey to investigate what are necessary for people to live the final stage of their life with dignity.
3 International Exchange
① French investigating commission (27 members) came to Japan, aiming to observation of Japan's policy and measures on population ageing. (July 13, 2009)
French members visited the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, as well as Japan Medical Association, hospital, facilities for elderly care, and so on. ILC-Japan held a meeting for exchanging views on Japan's cultural and social characteristics in regard to older people, and population aging on July 13.
② Dr. Kazuo Hasegawa, Advisory Board of ILC-Japan attended the first in a series of dinner salons on Alzheimer's in an Aging Society in New York hosted by ILC-USA and the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. (Sep. 22, 2009)
③ Mr. Joe Oldman, Senior Policy Advisor -Housing for Age Concern and Help the Aged in Great Britain, visited Japan (Oct.14-19, 2009)
ILC-Japan arranged a program to introduce Mr. Oldman to the current status of older people in Japan including visiting elderly housing and discussion with the experts during his stay in Tokyo from October 14 to 19.
④ Dr. Hiroshi Shibata, Advisory Board of ILC-Japan attended the conference “Dutch life expectancies in international perspective” in Leiden, Netherlands hosted by Leyden Academy and ILC-Netherlands. (Nov. 10-11, 2009)
During two day symposium, experts from the United States, Japan, French and the Netherlands came together to reflected on the differences in life expectancy at old age.
Dr. Butler (ILC-US), Dr. Shibata (ILC-Japan), Dr. Forette (ILC-France) and Dr. Meij (ILC-NL) presented structure of the care for older people at the symposium as representatives of each country.
4 Fund-raising
ILC-Japan endeavor to obtain funds from corporations and subsidies from Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare this year as the previous year, in addition to annual fees of supporting member companies.
