Activity Report October 2009 - January 2010(ILC-DR)
1 ILC-DR celebrates International Day of Older Persons
With the participation of 400 elderly Dominicans from Santo Domingo, and 3 other provinces we celebrated the International Day of Older Persons in the Sport Palace. The activity was prepared with the cooperation of the Dominican Network for Dignity in Old Age and supported financially by the Office of the Vice- President and a group of business.
The agenda included participation of representatives from older people of the different communities where they presented view of their social and economical situation and the invisibility they seem to have in our society, and also a lunch and an artistic show that was greatly applauded by all.
For that occasion we prepared a document with two basic demands:
1. A solidarity pension for all people 65 and over especially those living in marginal sectors and,
2. Inclusion of that population in the National Health Insurance.
Those needs were identified by the majority of older people present in the activity. This document was to be presented by us to the central government in the hope to be heard, since we have a law passed in 2007 that creates the Dominican System of Social Security and although these two demands are contemplated in it, they have not been enforced yet.
That was also discussed in the media on that occasion.
